This thing that has become known as "The Streak" started in 1984.
The only Auburn football games that I attended (excluding bowl games) were home games. I have been going to Auburn football games since I was a small boy.
October 13th, 1984, changed my life. My father, Bob, called me that Saturday and asked if I wanted 2 tickets to the Auburn - Florida State that night. I said that I did...then he asked me if I knew that the game was in Tallahassee. Well, I knew that Tallahassee was in Florida, but I had never had the pleasure of visiting. I asked Bob how to get there and he told me to go to Hamilton Road (Highway 27), take a left and drive for about three and a half hours.
I asked Teresa (my wife) if she wanted to go and she did. I called Mark and asked if he wanted to go (picking up an extra ticket shouldn't be a problem) and he did, so off we went. As most of you know, Auburn won the game 42-41. There were over 1100 yards of total offense in the game. To say it was exciting doesn't do it justice. Well, we were hooked...with a capital "H".
The next opportunity to attend an away game was the game in Birmingham. Since it was a tradition at my house to have a party and watch the game on television, we did. I will not revive the awful memories of that game, but I made a vow at the end of the game that this was the last time I was going to sit and watch Auburn play football on television.
That was many years ago. The Streak has survived weddings, funerals, a heart attack and back surgery. I hope it continues, because it has provided me with many wonderful memories, some of those I'll try to share with you.
